Description
Description | The THERMAX project aims to develop an advanced heat recovery solution for steel production processes using Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), integrating Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems with high-efficiency thermal storage solutions. The project focuses on two main use cases: recovering heat from hot slag produced during the EAF process and from cooling billets using heat exchangers connected to ORC systems. The recovered thermal energy is converted into electricity and usable heat, enhancing the energy efficiency of the industrial process and reducing fossil fuel consumption. THERMAX addresses a key challenge in heat recovery from EAF operations: the discontinuity and variability of thermal flows which complicate the integration of energy conversion technologies, incorporating in the project incorporates thermal buffers based on phase change materials (PCMs) and sensible heat storage, capable of stabilizing energy output even under fluctuating thermal conditions. The approach proposed by THERMAX aligns with European decarbonization objectives, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions in the steel sector and improve the overall sustainability of the production process. The project includes experimental testing and validation in industrial settings, in collaboration with leading steel industry partners, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the solution in real-world contexts. Studies will involve advanced simulations and pilot trials to assess the performance of ORC systems and thermal buffers, evaluating their energy efficiency and environmental impact. |
