Containerization and Packaging (C&P) Holdings of Singapore is a building container facility at Thilawa port under a 25-year BOT contract with the Myanmar Port Authority. Total project cost was estimated at US$ 160 million, but the first two berths, which became operational in January 1997, cost US$50 million. The berths remain underutilized due to poor land transportation links with Rangoon. Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding is engaged in building bridges, jetties, barges, buildings and sluice gates for the Thilawa port. Facilities for C&P's operation will include a 750,000 square metre back-up area; two dedicated ship-to-shore gantry cranes; four rubber tyre gantry cranes in the container storage area or up to six empty front loaders; at least 20,000 square metres of warehouse space; and office buildings for port users. Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery Co., Ltd. supplied two Quay Side Container Cranes and three Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes in 1997. Located 25 kilometers from the country's capital city Yangon, the new terminal occupies 185 acres (75 hectares), with a total berth length of 3,280 feet (1,000 meters). The facility currently has two only quay cranes, but the number will be increased to seven when the terminal is fully developed. The whole project was expected to be finished by 1998. Hutchison Whampoa Group increased its holdings in the container port facility at Thilawa (Yangon) from 20% to 100% as of March 2009.
