There is broad societal consensus that the progressive loss of biodiversity and climate change are among the most pressing problems. Biodiversity-friendly (green) land design can promote biodiversity and counter the particular vulnerability of settlement areas to the consequences of climate change. Nevertheless, biodiversity-friendly, climate-adapted designs are often not implemented. Reasons are low awareness and knowledge among professionals and committed lay people about interfaces and mutual support between biodiversity and climate change, lack of market availability of products and services, and a lack of approaches to scalability of biodiversity and climate-friendly design. The two main objectives of the project are: a) to think together on biodiversity, climate change mitigation and adaptation and to communicate appropriate approaches in the design of green spaces and buildings and, where necessary, to develop them (building on existing approaches); and B) to make a substantial contribution to the “mainstreaming” of biodiversity-friendly and climate-adapted (green) area and building design. For this purpose, Zukunftsgrün creates training and educational opportunities, builds a transdisciplinary network of experts from planning and implementation of land design, demonstrates the scalability of biodiversity-friendly climate-adapted land design through an organisation with 200+ locations and contributes to the awareness of citizens, administration and economy through intensive public relations work. It builds on existing solutions and networks in the programme area such as “flower ambassadors” in Germany and Vorarlberg, “Green Gallus Valley” in St. Gallen and “Nature Diversity in the municipality” as well as the e5 community programme and the energy consultant network in Vorarlberg.
