Description
Description | The first-phase alignment of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail project has been approved by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The 31-km-long corridor will connect major transit and institutional hubs including Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, Thampanoor bus stand and railway station, the Secretariat, and the Government Medical College Hospital. The project will be implemented by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) and will feature 27 stations with key interchange stations at Kazhakoottam, Technopark, and Karyavattom. Preparatory works include the construction of flyovers at Sreekaryam, Ulloor, and Pattom to ease traffic congestion, with the Sreekaryam flyover construction progressing rapidly. KMRL has been directed to prepare and submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR) in line with the Metro Rail Policy, 2017, and central government guidelines. The project was initially sanctioned in 2015 and later handed over to KMRL in 2022, which recommended a conventional metro system over monorail or light metro for the city's growing transport needs. |
