Description

The Thomas Sankara Mausoleum is the final resting place of the former president of Burkina Faso, Thomas Sankara, and his twelve closest companions. The mausoleum features thirteen tombs arranged concentrically under skylights, thirteen columns representing the absence of those killed, and a large 34-metre dome for protection and passive ventilation. It is constructed using locally sourced laterite and clay bricks, involving local communities in the building process. The mausoleum is the first stage of the larger Thomas Sankara Memorial Park project, which will include an amphitheater, restaurants, shops, offices, educational and conference facilities, and a symbolic 100-meter tower.
