Description
Description | Opportunity In order to provide more effective and accessible justice services in Thunder Bay, the Superior Court and Ontario Courts of Justice, previously operating from three separate locations, were consolidated into a new purpose-built facility. Innovations The facility has the capacity for expansion and internal flexibility to maximize usefulness throughout its lifetime. Under the Project Agreement, Plenary Justice faces deductions to its monthly payments if it does not meet its performance obligations as set out in the Project Agreement. Results The new, multi-storey building has 15 courtrooms, including a Multiple Accused High Security Courtroom, and four conference/settlement suites. The facility has the province’s first Aboriginal Conference Settlement Suite. The building was designed to be barrier-free including accessible courtrooms, infrared hearing assistance and barrier-free witness stand and jury box. The courthouse has enhanced capacity for interpretation including one jury room permanently equipped for simultaneous interpretation and two portable interpretation booths. The building was designed and constructed to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standard including a focus on energy efficiency, high quality indoor environment through building material selection and green housekeeping practices. The courthouse features a contemporary design that fits into the downtown context of Thunder Bay. “Plenary Group is pleased to be working with the Government of Ontario to deliver the much needed Thunder Bay Consolidated Courthouse project. We are committed to working with the community and our partners to bring local jobs and economic development to Thunder Bay and surrounding communities.” - Mike Marasco, Senior Vice-President, Plenary Group |
