Tianjin Five Continents International Container Terminal Co., Ltd, a joint venture company, was granted a 25-year BOT contract to provide the terminal operations and other related services in November 2005. Under the contract, the project company was created by NWS Ports management Ltd., the wholly owned subsidiary of New World Infrastructure (NWI) (18%), Cosco Ports (Tianjin) Ltd.(14%), Tianjin Port Holdings Co.(40%), China Shipping Terminal Development Co., Ltd.(14%) and China Merchants International Terminals (Tianjin) Ltd (14%). Except NWI, the rest of the sponsor companies were all state-owned. With the total investment of US$ 287.3 million (RMB 2,378), the container terminal had four berths with a quay length of 1,202 meters and a water depth alongside of 15.7 meters, occupying an area of 516,000 square meters with an designed annual handling capacity of 1,500 thousand TEUs.
