Description
Description | The world's longest expressway tunnel, the 22.13 km Tianshan Shengli Tunnel, has opened in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. It is the centerpiece of the Urumqi-Yuli Expressway and halves the travel time between Urumqi and Korla from over seven hours to around 3.5 hours. The tunnel cuts through the Tianshan Mountains at nearly 3,000 meters above sea level, featuring the deepest vertical shaft for a highway tunnel. Construction started in April 2020 and faced extreme environmental challenges. The project aims to enhance regional connectivity and strengthen links with Central and South Asia under the Belt and Road Initiative. |
