Tibet Mega-Dam Hydropower Project

A $167 billion hydropower project in Tibet on the Yarlung Tsangpo river, aiming to become one of the biggest infrastructure projects in history. The project involves drilling tunnels to channel water through turbines to generate up to 70 gigawatts of power, potentially producing 300 terawatt-hours annually. It is intended to stimulate China's economy, enhance energy security, and tighten control over Tibet. The project began construction in July 2025 and is overseen by China Yajiang Group, a state-owned company.
