Tijuana River Wastewater Infrastructure Update

An agreement between the U.S. and Mexico to address and solve the decades-long Tijuana River sewage crisis by updating outdated wastewater infrastructure to handle higher flows. The project involves major updates to wastewater treatment plants at the border, including the San Antonio de los Buenos treatment plant in Mexico and the South Bay International Wastewater Treatment Plant in San Diego. Mexico will allocate $93 million toward sanitation infrastructure and complete all projects by December 31, 2027, while the U.S. will release funds to rehabilitate a pump station and collection pipes.
