Description

Description

The Tomoka Hills golf course is a proposed private golf course located within the Mill Creek Sink basin in the City of Alachua. The project involves the development of a golf course on a karst landscape, which raises environmental concerns due to its proximity to the Floridan Aquifer and the presence of sinkholes. The course is designed to irrigate about 94 acres using approximately 250,000 gallons of groundwater daily, including a 2.5-acre lined pond supported by groundwater. The project was initially approved in April 2025 for Tower Hill Insurance employees and guests, but in March 2026, the access was expanded to members of a property owners association, increasing the intensity of use. Environmental safeguards recommended were not fully adopted, and the approval process has been controversial.
