Description | A 53-kilometer high-speed rail line connecting the port city of Genoa with Tortona in Piedmont, including 37 kilometers of tunnels. One tunnel is 27 kilometers long. The project aims to shift transport of goods from Ligurian port cities to northern Europe from road to rail starting next year, increasing to 50% by 2050. Passenger travel time between Milan and Genoa will be cut to about an hour from more than 1.5 hours. The cost is 8.5 billion euros and the tunnels are 90% complete. The project started in 2012 and was slowed by difficult geology and asbestos discovery. |
