Description
Description | The proposed Project is the decontamination and decommissioning of an approximate 29,330 m2 landfill in the Town of Churchbridge Saskatchewan. The site is being decommissioned as a result of a Phase II Environmental Site Assessment (ESA). A Phase II ESA was undertaken in September 2014 and found there was potential leachate plume migrating northeast towards the compliance boundary; the extent of this plume is unknown. The ESA also identified potential impacts to groundwater. The scope of work for the Project includes the completion of further studies for the purpose of decontamination and decommissioning, the development of a corrective action plan, the design of closure and post closure plans, and a construction of final landfill cover. All landfill decommissioning would increase capacity to reduce soil and air pollutants. All decommissioning projects increase capacity to reduce soil and air impacts by implementing proper capping of the landfill which will 1) immediately reduce and eventually stop leachate generation which has the potential to impact soil and water, and 2) reduce air emissions from decomposing waste and operating landfill equipment. Decommissioning the site will also meet Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Environment’s objectives for environmental protection. |
