The Project proposes to expand an existing four hectare (ha) (2 ha landfill, 1 ha leachate pond [leachate is the liquid that drains or ’leaches’ from a landfill], and 1 ha compost area) regional landfill in order to accommodate additional communities, including the Town of Tisdale; the Villages of Bjorkdale, Valparaiso and Ridgedale; and the Rural Municipalities of Tisdale and Connaught. Description
Description | The Project proposes to expand an existing four hectare (ha) (2 ha landfill, 1 ha leachate pond [leachate is the liquid that drains or ’leaches’ from a landfill], and 1 ha compost area) regional landfill in order to accommodate additional communities, including the Town of Tisdale; the Villages of Bjorkdale, Valparaiso and Ridgedale; and the Rural Municipalities of Tisdale and Connaught. The expanded landfill will also service James Smith, Kinistin and Yellow Quill First Nations, and potentially the Red Earth First Nation. The scope of work for the Project includes the construction of a new cell, new leachate pond (where water that contains dissolved contaminants is collected and stored), a new compost pad, and engineering. The new compost area is being included in an effort to divert more waste from the landfill and increase the life of the asset. This Project is Phase 2 of the landfill cell that was constructed in 2018. Phase 1 began in summer 2018 with a cell that was built over the northern half of the landfill. The southern half, Phase 2, will be built in 2020 and will include the leachate evaporation cell. The full landfill cell design, has a natural divide, therefore this two-phased construction approach was readily achievable. A Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessment is currently underway, with a Corrective Action Plan (CAP) to follow. |
