Description
Description | The project consists of construction of new active transportation multi-use paths (MUP) in the Town of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The project was identified in the town’s Active Transportation Plan to support a core active transportation route within the town’s downtown business core, residential area and high school district. The project scope includes construction of 4 new asphalt multi-use paths totalling 2.93 kilometres (km) as well as 130 metres (m) of new sidewalk. Using All Ages & Abilities (AAA) national guidelines, the multi-use paths connect existing path and sidewalk networks to accommodate pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The project will complete the following 4 phases of the Yarmouth multi-use pathways network: Haley Road and Parade Street MUP: 750m by 2.5m new asphalt path; Haley Road and Forest Street MUP: 1000m by 2.5m new asphalt path; Starrs Road MUP 1: 905m by 2.5m new asphalt path, new traffic light replacement and new sidewalk construction (130m by 2m concrete); and Starrs Road MUP 2 extension: 275m by 2.5m new asphalt path. The project also includes the following new fixed assets: 1 bike rack, 1 bench, 1 trash receptacle, and 64 tactile plates, (a system of textured ground surface indicators to assist the visually impaired effectively navigate the surrounding environment). The project will benefit the community by providing safe, multi-use paths encouraging a healthier lifestyle for town residents and visitors, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by reducing vehicle use. |
