According to the latest data published by the European Union in the Digital and Economy Society Index 2021 (DESI 2021), Italy ranks 20th out of 27 EU Member States in digital knowledge and skills. It is alarming to see how Italy lags significantly behind other EU countries on Human capital. Against this situation, the chair aims to fill a gap in the digital skills and performance of Italian people, starting with making today's and tomorrow's citizens and professionals aware of the rules that govern artificial intelligence (AI). In this sense, knowledge of AI EU law is a necessary condition for bridging the gap mentioned above, and for improving the quality of digital transformation and participation in democratic life, common values and civic engagement. Based on these needs, the chair promotes 3 interrelated TRAILS of activitiesThe chair aims to fill a gap in the digital skills of Italians, starting from making citizens and professionals of today and tomorrow aware of the European law governing artificial intelligence (AI). The main objectives of the chair are: - To promote the understanding, wide dissemination and excellence of the interdisciplinary learning experience on EU AI law. - To provide students, young professionals and society at large with knowledge of EU studies, with a specific focus on the EU's global leadership role in deciding on AI. On this basis, the chair proposes 3 interconnected trails of activities: T1: 3 interdisciplinary university courses for undergraduate students (given in 3 different Schools and Departments of Trento University); T2: 2 University courses for postgraduate students (given within a Master and a PhD program of Trento University); T3: 3 meeting the expert events each year, open to students and general public. By addressing the lack of digital skills and the promotion of EU role and law on AI, the chair engages with 2 priorities of the 2022 Erasmus + Program: Digital transformation and Participation in Democratic life.
