Training activity on counterfeit coins analysis for technical experts

The rationale of the project is to maintain an efficient framework for the protection of the euro not only at EU level but also considering third countries considered as prioritaries, by organizing a dedicated training activity on counterfeit coin analysis. As regards the background, Banco de España by means of the Coin National Analysis Centre (CNAC.ES) gather suspected counterfeit coins coming from either police forces through the NCO or from credit institutions, retailers or public through Banco de España branches. All of them are submitted to CNAC.ES to determine the coin legitimacy. If it is found to be counterfeit, the coins need to be classified into the appropriate class or variant that identifies a counterfeiter or a source of production. After the classification is completed, CNAC.ES stores all the relevant information about the case, in terms of both statistical information (location, quantity, way of detection, etc.) and technical information. Then, these information is put at the disposal of the police forces and Eurosystem through the common database Counterfeit Monitoring System.
