Training activity on counterfeit coins analysis for technical experts

The main objectives of this training activity on counterfeit coin analysis for technical experts are to provide with sufficient technical information to perform adequately the procedure for the technical analysis of counterfeit coins, encourage the exchange of knowledge and experience in practical daily work and upgrade relationships among staff from different CNACs and NCOs. Since the whole EU Member States are invited to take part in this activity, this serves to strengthen multilateral cooperation among the MS authorities responsible for protecting the currency in circulation and increasing the level of protection of the euro by police forces. The resources will be provided by the Spanish Coin National Analysis Centre (CNAC-ES), Banco de España Monetary Offences Investigation Brigade (BIBE) and Spanish Mint Laboratory (FNMT-RCM). The content deals with topics covered by those organizations, including visual inspection and preliminary tests, use of optical tools, physical and electromagnetic measurements, material composition and structure according to Common Basic Inspection Plan, among others. In terms of expected results and impacts, at the short term will allow to enhance knowledge of working procedures to promote and encourage investigations in connection with the completion of reliable measurements, thus providing a common understanding of methods related to counterfeit coin analysis. At medium term: creating areas of cooperation between CNACs and NCOs at European level and sharing best practices at laboratory level to improve the capabilities. At long term: strengthen cooperation between the authorities responsible for protecting euro coins and increasing the level of protection of the euro by police forces
