Training focused on X-ray scanner image interpretation and customs control process

Eastern external border of the EU is heavily burdened by attempts to commit crimes of individuals and organized groups in the field of illicit trade. For that reason, it is important to maintain the same high level of customs control efficiency in all countries at the eastern external border. The overall objective of this project is to enhance the effectiveness of detection of illicit trade, smuggling and counterfeiting affecting the Union’s financial interests by improving the skills, knowledge and competence of customs officers serving at the eastern external border of the EU in the field of X-ray scanner image interpretation as well as deepening international cooperation through sharing of best practices. The objectives of this project will be achieved through organization of two cycles of 4-day training focused on X-ray scanner image interpretation and customs control process for customs officers from countries at the EU eastern external border and one 3-day evaluation meeting after these trainings. Training on X-ray scanner image interpretation is designed for customs officers operating X-ray scanners from the EU Member States having external eastern border with the third countries. 22 participants from 11 countries (Slovakia, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, Greece, Romania, and Bulgaria) will attend each cycle of the training. Expected results of this project are improving of skills, knowledge and competence of customs officers in the field of evaluation of scans made by X-ray scanners and fight against smuggling, which can be used in their daily work in order to increase the effectivity of performance of customs control and capability to reveal illegal activities. Enhanced effectiveness of detection of illicit imports, smuggling and counterfeiting will lead to better protection of the EU eastern external border and increased protection of EU citizens’ security and EU financial interests’ protection.
