Description | The Trans-Arabian Pipeline, known as Tapline, was constructed between 1947 and 1950 to transport crude oil from Saudi Arabia's eastern oil fields to the Lebanese port of Sidon on the Mediterranean. Stretching 1,648 kilometers and crossing Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon, it was the world's longest pipeline at the time. The project required 35,000 tons of steel pipes, 16,000 workers, and cost $230 million. Tapline significantly shortened the journey of Saudi oil to Europe, carrying nearly one-third of the Kingdom's oil exports by 1951. The pipeline also led to the development of new towns along its route in northern Saudi Arabia. |
