TRANS-SAHARA Living Labs Groundwater Recharge and Pond Restoration

The TRANS-SAHARA project involves setting up six Living Labs across Africa (Senegal, Chad, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Ghana, Tunisia) to develop nature-based solutions for land and water management. The project focuses on restoring degraded ecosystems, improving water and food security, and boosting farmers' incomes. Key infrastructure includes excavating and reinforcing ponds to hold more rainwater and designing infrastructure to capture stormwater and recharge groundwater aquifers through filtration. The project also trains local communities to monitor groundwater levels using low-cost sensors and works with national water authorities to map groundwater reserves.
