Description

Description

The Project involves the rehabilitation and upgrading of existing water supply infrastructure, most notably the Calueque-Oshakati canal (approximately 150 km length) supplying Northern Namibia with irrigation and drinking water. This canal faces severe losses, significant pollution and sedimentation problems generating high costs of maintenance and purification. The infrastructure has suffered from the civilian war in Angola, and also from illegal off-take of water.  800,000 people are currently benefiting from the canal supplies and an additional 100,000 in southern Angola will be supplied shortly thanks to the works that will be carried out. The EU-AITF TA grant is being used to finance the project identification and preparation through a dual-phase prefeasibility study and full feasibility study to determine which options for the water supply infrastructure are to be pursued and how. As of February 2018, the Pre-feasibility study has been completed. The pre-feasibility study has provided preliminary information on water demand and the supply situation on-site, the best water transport solution and estimated the costs of the various scenarios. It made recommendations for further investigations at feasibility level. The feasibility study shall establish an integrated bulk water master plan and provide among other an analysis of the projected water demand and available raw water sources, as well as the corresponding distribution infrastructure required, a detailed design of the technical solution selected, a benefit/cost analysis and a tariff recommendation, an environmental impact analysis, and the preparation of the tender documents. The tender is expected for the second half of 2019.
