Description
Description | The effects of climate change in the form of more frequent and more severe extreme weather events (droughts, heavy rain, floods) are leading to a deterioration in living conditions in northern Uganda, in particular to a threat to water resources and a deterioration in water and sanitation supplies, which are already under massive pressure due to strong population growth. The need for clean drinking water and adequate sanitation is also increasing due to the high number of refugees from neighboring countries, especially from South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which Uganda is the largest host country for refugees on the African continent. Finally, the outdated water and sanitation infrastructure is inefficient and consumes a disproportionate amount of electricity and fossil fuels. The aim of the project is for refugees and the population of northern Uganda to use climate-adapted and more climate-friendly water and sanitation infrastructure as well as other integrated measures. By building sustainable water and sanitation infrastructure and protecting water resources, the vulnerability of refugees and the Ugandan population of northern Uganda (target group) in the face of the effects of climate change is to be reduced. This is also intended to reduce the potential for conflict between the groups. The project sponsor is the Ugandan Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE). Key measures include 1) improving water and sanitation supplies (e.g. new construction, rehabilitation of water systems, construction of toilets in public buildings and schools), 2) strengthening the resilience of water resources and the population (e.g. protection and rehabilitation of wetlands and water catchment areas), 3) project-related hygiene and awareness-raising campaigns and measures to prevent conflicts and 4) consulting services. |
