Transit U Improvement Project

Project Description, San Francisco Public Works has hired R&S Construction Management, Inc to perform a variety of infrastructure improvements within the city’s “Transit U” corridor. The “Transit U” includes Fremont Street between Market Street and Mission Street, Mission Street between Fremont Street and First Street, and First Street between Mission Street and Market Street. Together, these three blocks connect Market Street with the Salesforce Transit Center, where multiple transit agencies use as a hub for their operations., The goal of this project is to make this crucial and heavily used corridor safer and more efficient for transit, pedestrians and private vehicle traffic. To achieve this goal, we will be making a variety of improvements to the area’s public right of way. This includes: constructing sidewalk bulb-outs to shorten crossing distances at intersections; constructing new, ADA-compliant curb ramps to increase accessibility; constructing new concrete bus pads at transit stops throughout the area; constructing a new transit island on Fremont Street near the Market Street intersection; replacing portions of the concrete street base and asphalt roadway surface; and installing new sidewalk pavers throughout the area., This project includes improvements to various underground utilities in the area as well. We will be replacing and updating water mains that are part of the city’s Auxiliary Water Supply System, which are used in firefighting and emergency response efforts. In addition, we will be constructing new sewer culverts throughout the area to connect newly installed catch basins with existing sewer infrastructure., In total, this work will enhance infrastructure used by multiple transit agencies, the San Francisco Fire Department, as well as local residents, commuters and nearby businesses.
