Description
Description | The proposed project is A continuation of Bank’s support to the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) to improve the reliability of the backbone transmission network, enable increased share of renewable energy generation in the energy mix, facilitate regional transmission interconnectivity and increased power trade, and modernize grid operations and maintenance practices by integrating digital platforms. The project aims to develop new high voltage backbone power transmission infrastructure (230kV and 400kV transmission lines and substations) and to upgrade existing transmission infrastructure to strengthen the capacity of the transmission grid to meet the growing power demand in Bangladesh. The proposed project investments will incorporate flexible and adaptive climate proof designs and operation/maintenance approaches. To ensures sustainability of these interventions, the project will provide technical assistance to to the beneficiary government agencies to strengthen their capacity related to climate resilience. The proposed project investments are largely distributed across the Southern, Central, and Northern regions of the country. With the increase in backbone transmission grid capacity and the availability of modern monitoring and control systems, electricity supply reliability will improve and the system will respond more effectively and flexibly to climate events and the growing demand. Further, supply security will improve due to the expected increase in regional interconnectivity/power trade and increased connection of domestic renewable energy power generation. Consequently, more private sector finance will be expected to flow into the sector to fund these renewable energy projects. |
