The Transport Project in Armenia, will improve the main road network, and rail services, as well as strengthen the planning capability of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, in line with a strategic objective of improving infrastructure quality, to enable private sector development. The components call for: 1) rehabilitation of the national road network, particularly, interstate trade routes. It includes engineering design and supervision, for civil works such as, surface dressings, overlays, and bridge rehabilitation and reconstruction. Furthermore, a road safety program will provide improved traffic controls, safety education, and a continued institutional strengthening of the Armenia Roads Directorate; 2) support the Armenia Railways Department (ARD), by financing the rehabilitation of tracks, and bridges, equipment, and works. Also included is the institutional strengthening of ARD, and three separate companies, namely on infrastructure management, and freight, and passenger services operation. Technical assistance, and training will be provided; 3) strengthening of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, mainly through technical support, and training. An Urban Transport Study will serve as the basis for improvement of services in urban transport.
