The Second Transport Project for South Africa will assist in financing the current development program of the South African Railways and Harbors Administration. Currently, traffic levels are growing and safe and reliable transportation routes are needed. The Railways and Harbors Administration development program will provide the capacity needed to meet increased traffic growth. The project will promote the development program by supplying additional capacity. Its components are: 1) provision of new locomotives and rolling stock; 2) expansion of workshops to assure adequate maintenance of equipment; and 3) improvement of the permanent way and other traffic facilities to increase their capacities to handle traffic. These improvements will allow the South African Railways and Harbors Administration to handle new and existing traffic demands.
