Description

Description

The Fifth Transportation Project for South Africa will assist in financing the development program of the South African Railways and Harbors Administration (SAR). The SAR operates the entire network of the Union and South West Africa. It is responsible for the management and maintenance of cartage services, road transport services, ocean ports, coastal shipping, and domestic and international air lines. As a result, the SAR must maintain a continuous program of expansion and modernization of the transportation system in South Africa. The Fifth Transportation Project will accomplish this goal by focusing on the modernization of the railway system. Its components are: 1) construction of 160 miles of new rail lines; 2) reconstruction of 150 miles of existing rail lines; 3) double tracking of 260 miles of rail lines; 4) electrification of 640 miles of track; and 5) procurement of electric, diesel, and steam locomotives, freight cars, coaches, motor coaches, and trailers. These improvements will help to alleviate growing pressure on the transportation system and meet the needs for the rapid economic development of South Africa.
