The Fourth Transport Project for South Africa will develop and expand the transport facilities of the South African Railways and Harbors Administration. The South African economy has been growing rapidly since the war. Most of the growth has been in industries generating large amounts of railroad freight. As a result, freight ton mileage on the railways has increased greatly since the end of the war. The Fourth Transport project will relieve the growing pressure on the transportation system. The components are: 1) increasing of line capacity by constructing double track lines, correction of curves and grades, enlargement of marshalling yards, and other corrective measures; 2) improvement of signaling and traffic control facilities; 3) electrification of track in regions of heavy traffic density; 4) new line construction to bypass congested areas and to serve regions of native resettlements; 5) procurement of additional motive power and rolling stock; 6) expansion of workshops and; 7) development of road transport and harbor facilities; and 8) development of airlines and coastal shipping. These improvements will increase the efficiency and productivity of the South African railway system.
