The Belgian Government has asked for a loan to help finance the cost of the modernization of the Charleroi-Clabecq canal. This project includes: widening parts of the present canal; and excavating a new course to avoid numerous curves which impede navigation including a tunnel one kilometer long which will be replaced by a deeply excavated open canal. The number of locks will be reduced from thirty one to only four in the total length of 47 km. The project will modernize the canal from Charleroi to Clabecq to accommodate 1,350 ton barges. An efficient system of inland waterway transportation is of great importance to the economy of Belgium. Such is particularly the case where the country's heavy industries are concerned, these being major users of the waterway system. It is essential to develop the system in keeping with modern requirements if the competitive position of these industries in the European Iron and Steel Community and the proposed European Common Market is to be maintained.
