Trash Containerization Pilot Program in West Harlem

A pilot program in the West Harlem neighborhoods of Morningside Heights, Manhattanville, and Hamilton Heights provides residents with large, lock-tight garbage containers to replace traditional garbage bags. The program aims to reduce rat infestations and improve cleanliness on sidewalks by using oversize bins for buildings with 31 or more units, smaller wheelie bins for buildings with fewer than 10 units, and a choice between the two for buildings with 10 to 30 units. Food waste must be placed in designated brown bins or sealed containers, and recycling can still be placed in clear bags. The program involves 1,000 bins and 16 new side-loading garbage trucks to empty the bins three times a week.
