Description | Traxtion is finalising a R3.4 billion rolling stock investment programme, the largest private freight rail investment in South Africa's history by value and fleet size. The programme includes acquisition and modernisation of locomotives and wagons to expand freight capacity and support rail reform. It involves 46 Wabtec diesel-electric locomotives, 42 partly modernised U26C units upgraded to C30MEI specification, and four fully modernised C30-8MMI models from KiwiRail, New Zealand. Locomotive upgrades will be done at Traxtion's Rail Services Hub in Rosslyn, with a minimum 60% local content requirement and creation of 662 direct jobs. The locomotives will arrive in four tranches between April 2026 and August 2027, with the first refurbished units entering service in Q3 2026. The programme aims to move more freight by rail reliably and at scale, with all wagons expected to be manufactured domestically. |
