Objectives - Ensure that the EU’s Directives on the procedural rights of suspected and accused persons are effectively implemented during trial waiver negotiations and proceedings whenever they are in use in the EU - Prevent the spread of trial waiver systems from fundamentally undermining the positive progress brought about in European criminal justice thanks to the EU’s “Roadmap on Procedural Rights” Activities - Management and coordination of the project team - Domestic research > Research training and toolkit > In-depth local research and monitoring > Research reports - Human stories, experience sharing and best practices > Collection of case studies > Development of regional and domestic practice guides > Domestic experience sharing meetings > Lauch events for domestic practice guides - Regional advocacy > Regional report > Launch event for regional report > Short composite film Type and number of persons benefiting from the project - 200 national and regional policy-makers - 1750 criminal justice practitioners Expected results - Improved understanding of the extent to which the spread of trial waiver systems across Europe has impacted the right to a fair trial, and whether the Directives provides sufficient safeguards; - Identification of risks to the right to a fair trial, and best-practices and procedural safeguards; and - Increased awareness of risks to fair trial rights and injustice associated with trial waiver systems.
