Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in has recently closed its Youth Centre doors due to asbestos contamination. The building is an older repurposed residential unit and the cost of remediation and major repairs is prohibitive. With a vibrant tourism and mining industry, the remote but densely populated City of Dawson boasts many venues for mature adults to socialize. Unfortunately a safe and adequate space for the youth to socialize does not exist. The new proposed 3000 square foot facility will run youth programs and activities targeted for community youth aged 12 to 25 years old. The facility will allow traditional pursuits such as craft workshops and knowledge sharing, in addition to creative pursuits such as music or fine arts as well other individual or group activities. The facility will also contain office space for youth services staff to provide confidential support services to youth and ensure the efficient delivery and development of youth services.
