Description

Description

The Tsleil-Waututh Nation (TWN) - Shoreline Protection and Climate Resilience project (the Project) will protect the reserve shoreline from coastal flooding and erosion. The area has experienced severe coastal erosion and is vulnerable to coastal flooding and sea level rise (SLR). The area includes: 13 community properties, related servicing and infrastructure and a regional sewer line siphon, community cemetery, archaeological sites, community canoe shed, and two creek estuaries. The Project combines beach nourishment and slope regrading with nature-based habitat enhancement and Indigenous adaptation solutions. Beach nourishment will protect the shoreline from wave action and coastal erosion, provide flood storage and space for SLR, promote habitat health and biodiversity, and improve community access to the shoreline. The Project aligns with TWN’s Land Use Plan policies. The scope of work for the Project includes: • Detailed concept planning and engineering; • Procurement, mobilizing, staging and site preparation • Construction of shoreline adaptation protection works - slope stabilization, beach nourishment (approx. 500m), rock till placement, and improved shoreline access • Knowledge exchange and training for TWN field technicians and community members • Installation of intertidal adaptation features • Marine riparian shoreline planting • As built survey, completion reports, and project reporting The Project will contribute to: increased structural and natural capacity to adapt to climate change impacts, natural disasters and/or extreme weather events.
