Description

Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, which was privatized in 1997, operates the Port of Tubarao and three terminals (the Vila Velha and Praia Mole terminals, and one berth in the Paul terminal) in the state of Espirito Santo. The Tubarao Port is located in Vitoria, Brazil and is the world's biggest iron export facility. The port and the railroads, connecting the mines to the port are owned by CVRD and have been operated for 32 years for captive use of ore and iron pellet shipments. Since 1997, CVRD has been investing R$ 48 million (US$ 47 million) to set up a cargo terminal in the Tubarao port at Espirito Santo state, for storage and handling of the grains cargo transported by the railroad network Ferrovia Centro Atlantica. Investment has also been directed to the installation of two cranes (US$ 11 million) for handling of container freight. CVRD has started marketing the facility to third parties. In 2009, the company started the rehabilitation of the facilities and the expansion of the handling and storage capacity. The total investment was estimated at US$ 680 million.
