Description

Description

The transmission project comprises a 500Kv transmission line connecting Tucurui, Maraba, Acailandia, Imperatriz, and Presidente Dutra substations. ANEEL, the Brazilian independent regulatory agency for the electricity sector, offered the line through a public bid and a consortium comprising Alusa and Schanin was the winner. After the public bid, a new company, Empresa Amazonense de Transmissão de Energia S.A (EATE), was created to built and operate the lines. EATE comprises Alusa, Schahin, and Eletrobras, a Brazilian state-owned company. By 2006, the project ownership was Alusa 27.43%, Eletrobrás 45.14%, Cemig 13.72% and Brascan 13.72%. The contract between ANEEL and EATE was signed in June 2001 and will be valid until June 2031. According to the contract, the line were expected to start operating within 22 months of signature. The line was inaugurated within the contractual deadline. The project reached financial closure in March 2002, when Brazil’s development Bank, BNDES, approved financing of US$209 millions (R$488 millions) for the project. The financing corresponds to 78.75 percent of the total investments of US$266 million (R$619 million). The total length of the line, from substation Tucurui to substation Presidente Dutra, was expected to be 942 KM. In addition to building and operating the transmission line, the project also comprises the construction of Acailandia substation and the expansion of the other substations involved. The project will increase the interconnection between the North and the Northeast regions. This project is the third section of the interconnection project linking these two regions. By 2009, the project ownership was Alusa 29%, Eletrobrás 40.2%, Cemig 14.9% and Brascan 14.9%.
