Turbine and Generator Upgrades at the Snare Forks Powerhouse

The project involves performing upgrades to correct alignment issues with the G1 hydro generation unit of the Snare Forks Powerhouse which will increase efficiency of clean energy generation. The project will also correct issues with the gate mechanism, in addition to addressing other components of the generator and turbine of the hydro generation unit, including the generator stator, as well as thrust and generator bearings. The Snare Hydro System is made up of four separate hydro plants, where the Snare Forks Powerhouse is used to handle load swings in the entire system. The Snare Forks Powerhouse is also used for storage in order to eliminate the impact on generation that rapid increases or decreases cause. The project upgrades will positively impact the reliability and efficiency of the Snare Forks Powerhouse, and subsequently the entire Snare Hydro System. The increased reliability of the system will mean that unscheduled shutdowns, resulting in the need for significant diesel usage, will be avoided. This Powerhouse is located 140km northwest of Yellowknife and does not belong to any one community, but rather serves four communities in its proximity.
