Turkey Habitat Improvement and Wildlife Management in Mason County

under construction

Heath Miles oversees more than 12,000 acres of turkey habitat at Chief Cornstalk and Bright McCausland Homestead Wildlife Management Areas in Mason County, West Virginia. The project involves building and maintaining turkey habitat, clearing fallow land encroached by invasive species, creating brooding sites, shrublands, grasslands, and young forests, and coordinating wildlife-focused forest management activities including timber harvests on over 400 acres. Recent work includes improving turkey habitat along interior service roads through daylighting and establishment of perennial strips. The project also includes trapping and translocating wild turkeys as part of a statewide survival study.
