The Twin Port V Action is part of global project aiming at the development and upgrade of the existing Motorways of the Sea link between the core network ports of Helsinki and Tallinn. These ports play a key role in the European transport network and connect the North Sea–Baltic Corridor to the Scandinavian-Mediterranean core network corridor. The Action aims at upgrading the efficiency of this maritime link and reducing the environmental externalities of RoRo and Ropax traffic sailing the route as well as upgrading the port infrastructure and hinterland connections. For the Port of Helsinki, the Action foresees the planning of the underground expansion of the West Harbour area, which will smoothen the connection of West Harbour to the TEN-T core network, the planning of the rearrangement of the berths LJ3, LJ4, LJ5 and LJ6 and land reclamation at West Harbour as well as the planning of the reconstruction of Terminal T1 at West Harbour. For the Port of Tallinn, the Action foresees the reconstruction of the ramp of quay No 15 at Muuga Harbour, the construction of Port Reception Facilities of sewage for quays No 13, 14 and 15 at Muuga Harbour, studies to upgrade the Terminal A area at Old City Harbour and the upgrade of the smart port system. Moreover, the Port of Helsinki will conduct a study on carbon-neutral construction that will benefit both ports.
