Tybee Island Beach Renourishment Project

Tybee Island has lost roughly 60% of its sand since the last beach renourishment in 2020, leading to concerns about beach erosion and tighter beach conditions during high tide. The island is seeking federal funding for a new beach renourishment project to restore the sand and prevent flooding, but federal funding has not been secured. The town has $8 million ready for its share of the project and is seeking $12 million as the federal share. Without federal funding, smaller, more expensive stopgap projects may be considered to prevent flooding and protect infrastructure such as the 2nd Street crossover boardwalk.
