Description | Designs for new railway stations, bridges, and other critical infrastructure needed to bring the Tyne and Wear Metro to Washington are being drawn up to secure Government support for the £900 million project. The extension will use the northern section of the mothballed Leamside railway line to link existing stations at Pelaw and South Hylton, with proposed new stations in Washington and Follingsby. Engineering consultants Arup have been appointed to carry out a feasibility study and specialist design work. The project aims to be delivered by 2032 and represents the first extension of the Metro system in over 20 years. |
