Description

Description

A 1-GW bidirectional submarine power cable project called the Tyrrhenian Link, authorized by the Italian government in 2023, to connect Sardinia to Sicily and the Italian mainland. The cable will increase electricity exchange between the regions, bolster grid reliability, and help grid operators efficiently use more renewable energy. It uses high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology with voltage source converter (VSC) technology, can move up to a gigawatt of power, reverse power flow nearly instantaneously, regulate frequency, smooth out oscillations in real time, and has black-start capability to restore the grid independently. The western section between Sardinia and Sicily was finished in January, and the eastern section between Sicily and Campania on the mainland was completed in April 2026, setting a world record for power cable depth at 2,150 meters below sea level.
