Uganda - Extension to Owen Falls Generating Station

The Owen Falls Generating Station extension Project aims at developing Uganda’s hydroelectric resources. The proposed Owen Falls extension by 5x40 MW generating units (although only two will be installed in the first stage), will provide urgently needed least cost capacity addition to Uganda's power generation and transmission facilities. It will continue and build upon the on-going sub-sector rehabilitation project that aims to foster economic development by providing adequate and reliable electric energy to satisfy all the productive sectors of the economy. The existing Owen Falls Power Station is presently being upgraded from its original 150 MW to 180 MW, but even then the capacity is insufficient to meet the Ugandan demand and to export to Kenya the full obligations under the terms of the 1988 modified agreement. When in commercial operation in 1997, the Owen Falls Extension will provide much needed additional generation capacity.
