Uganda - Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Program

The Uganda RWSS Program fits in to the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI) developed by the African Development Bank to address the challenge of providing basic water supply and sanitation services to the bulk of the continent’s population living in the rural areas. This program supports Government’s efforts to achieve the water and sanitation PEAP targets and the MDGs, thus contributing to poverty eradication. It has the following components: (i) Provision of new and rehabilitation of existing water supply services to communities, including related studies where required; (ii) Provision of new sanitation facilities in public places and for schools and health centres, including related studies where required; (iii) Environmental Assessment, Mitigation and Monitoring; (iv) Community Development and Capacity Building - Community sensitization, awareness raising, organization and training and capacity building in water supply and sanitation services; and (v) Institutional Support and Capacity building to Central Ministries to enable them to play the role of policy setting, mentoring of local governments, setting of standards, monitoring and auditing. The cost of the program during 2005/6 to 2008/9 is estimated UA 156.4 million.
