The 272-kilometre rail line will connect Kampala to Malaba at the Kenya border, linking Uganda to Kenya's rail network and the Indian Ocean seaport of Mombasa. Citibank has been appointed to mobilise financing for the project. Initial preparatory works have begun with some government financing, but full-scale construction is pending funding availability. The project was handed to Turkish construction firm Yapi Merkezi in 2024 after delays in securing financing from Beijing. |
