Description | Construction work has started on the UK's new £750m national supercomputer, which will be the most powerful computer in the UK and one of the most powerful in the world when finished at the end of next year. It will be hosted in University of Edinburgh buildings on the outskirts of Penicuik and Roslin in Midlothian. The supercomputer will have thousands of processors and be capable of a billion-billion calculations per second, helping researchers and commercial companies simulate complex phenomena. It will be 50 times more powerful than the previous national supercomputer ARCHER2 and will support quantum computing development and climate change modelling. Surplus heat generated will be used to warm university buildings and potentially nearby homes. |
