Description | The 300-series austenitic stainless steels (ASS) are an excellent choice for the automotive sector, but its use is limited by the price fluctuation due to the nickel content. Current low Ni grades of 200-series do not fully match the outstanding balanced properties 300-series steels, thus they are not considered a sound option for this sector. ULTRASLIM aims at developing ultrafine ASS – with low Ni content, high strength/ductility and good formability/weldability for the automotive industry. The new steels will be based on modifications of actual 201 ASS with an appropriate martensite thermomechanical treatment for ultrafine (< 1µm) austenitic microstructure production. |
