UMC-Polar 8-Inch Chip Manufacturing Partnership

UMC signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Polar Semiconductor to explore collaboration in 8-inch wafer production in the U.S. The partnership aims to expand U.S. 8-inch chip manufacturing capacity, strengthen domestic supply chains, and serve customers in automotive, aerospace, industrial, and defense sectors. Polar plans to double its 8-inch fab capacity from 20,000 to 40,000 wafers per month within one to two years, supported by over US$100 million from the CHIPS and Science Act. The collaboration focuses on integrating UMC's mature-node technology with Polar's U.S.-based manufacturing capabilities.
