The project supports the University of Namibia (UNAM) in setting up a new Department of Wildlife Management and Tourism Studies (DWMTS, formerly Department of Wildlife Management and Ecotourism, DWME) on the UNAM campus in Katima Mulilo. The aim of the project is to contribute to improving the management of natural resources and the infrastructure of protected areas in the SADC region. The training situation for specialists in the field of natural resource management will be improved and the current shortage of skilled workers will be reduced. The project is intended to appeal to students in Namibia as well as other countries in the region. The additional, qualified staff will enable the cross-border protected areas in the SADC region to be better protected against pressure from use and thus developed into a more competitive tourist destination. The measure thus contributes to the economic and ecological development of the region and at the same time promotes regional integration. The project includes an infrastructure component that includes construction and equipment measures (component 1), as well as measures to set up degree programs and support research programs (component 2). The target group of the project are school leavers and employees of public and private employers who are being qualified for higher management tasks. The total costs for the project for the first phase amount to approximately EUR 12.2 million. Of this, EUR 10 million will be financed from FC funds.
